My search for meaning and 3 ways to avoid being a digital dumb dumb

Late 1990s desktop computer on fire

Hello Friends,

Time is moving faster than I can keep up. And while it has taken me awhile to get this newsletter up and running, the A.I. advancements/hype cycle continues full steam ahead, leaving many of us confused, exhausted, and responsible for educating ourselves.

I've limited my consumption of news and have become selective about who I spend my time with. We only have so much energy to give in a day. I've been investing mine into looking for fulltime work (it's rough in LA), creating artwork with GenAI, and going deeper in my search for meaning.

This week's newsletter includes a mindblowing podcast episode that I've listened to 3x and continue to learn something new.

I was also inspired to write a 3-step guide to avoid being a digital dumbass. Not that any of y'all need it, but feel free to share it with those who do. ;-)

I've also included a few articles, a research study, and an interactive quiz to test your ability to spot A.I. generated audio and images.

I hope you enjoy!

And if you don't want to receive future emails from me, you are welcome to unsubscribe.

If you're happy to hear from me and find this content interesting, I'm glad to have you and would LOVE to hear from you! Let me know how you're doing, what you want to learn, and what you enjoyed most about this newsletter. It would mean the world to me!

Talk soon!

Does Life Have Meaning? PART ONE: How do we find meaning (and happiness) in the contemporary age?

Humans have a special need for meaning in their life. A life without meaning, many would agree, has no value. But what does meaning actually mean? And how can we ensure our life is full of it?

Professor of Psychology and Cognitive Science John Vervaeke has dedicated much of his research precisely to this question. He is well-known for his attempts to define a meaningful life in an age characterised by increasing rates of depression and loneliness. He has also been at the forefront of efforts to treat studies on mindfulness and related topics with seriousness in academia.

In this talk, he gives the lay of the land: why are we devoid of meaning in the current moment, and what can we do about it?

The 5 Questions from The Futility of Trying to Teach Everything of Importance (1989) by Grant Wiggins

  1. Whose voice am I hearing? From where is the statement or image coming? What’s the point of view?
  2. What is the evidence? How do we know? How credible is the evidence?
  3. How do things fit together? What else do I know that fits with this?
  4. What if? Could it have been otherwise? Are there alternatives?
  5. What difference does it make? Who cares? Why should I care?

CREATIVE WORK

One of my pieces was shown last week at a gallery event at the Oculus WTC building in NYC. This is the first time my artwork using Generative A.I. has been publicly shared. Needless to say, I'm pretty darn proud.

If you haven't seen my work, I invite you to check it out on Instagram or my portfolio on HUG!
